The 86th Academy Awards are over. Social media is sure to be commenting on the Academy Awards from start to finish. Here’s some takeaways from the night:

  • Unspoken winner: twitter

At last night’s Oscars ceremony, the unspoken winner was Twitter and the winner of Twitter was Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres.

You will recall the iconic image of Obama hugging his wife with the caption “Four more years”, when he was reelected. The Internet went wild but not as wild as Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres’ record breaking selfie. She handed her phone to Bradley Cooper and Hollywood’s finest quickly crowded: Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Ellen herself, Kevin Spacey, Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o, and that’s Lupita’s brother on the right, by the way. Oh and there’s Angelina Jolie, although only half of her face is visible in the image, plus a bit of Jared Leto. “If only Bradley’s arm was longer,” was her caption. Within an hour, the picture had been retweeted over a million times and by the end of the ceremony it had been retweeted over 2 million times. Clearly the winner of Twitter was Ellen.

  • And the Oscar goes to.. #leonardodicaprio

The second most important topic of #oscar2014 was Leonardo DiCaprio who wows in the Wolf of the Wall Street fails to win an Oscar again –For the 4. Time!- sets twitter afire. In spite of delivering a brilliant performance as Jordan Belfort in Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, he went home empty handed like always. While very funny pictures of him with Oscar were spreading around, his fans voiced their outrage in Twitter and #LeonardoDiCaprio was trending at number one worldwide leaving #Oscars2014 behind.

  • ‘May the best man win’!?

The victim of his cruel fate Leonardo DiCaprio congratulates Matthew McConaughey for winning the award for Best Actor. He and his fans had hoped that he would finally get his first Oscar almost 20 years after he was first nominated. However,  he lost the trophy to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club. One of the phenomenal pictures from the #oscar2014: Obviously, DiCaprio sincerely congratulated McConaughey. Really? Who knows.

  • Show must go on:

One of the most surreal moments in this year’s ceremony was when DeGeneres, dressed all in white, went down into the crowd with three takeaway pizzas and a pizza guy divided them out among the celebrities who are supposed to be carb-fearing. It is spectacular how many seemed keen to get a slice of the action: Brad Pitt enlisted as a napkin boy, Chiwetel Ejiofor tried to swipe a whole box to himself; Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep both went in with elbows flying.
